How to Make a Back-up Copy of Your H Drive Directory by Burning It onto a CD

(updated 5-21-04)

First empty your directory of unwanted files.

In Outlook delete all unneeded messages and delete your deleted messages file. Remember that the CD will hold a huge amount of data so most of you can put all your PowerPoints and images on one CD ROM disk. Tim or Liz will give you a blank CD disk from our high school library supplies if you don’t happen to have one and don’t want to have to buy a whole package of them. The ones we are supplying are CD-R’s and have 700 megabytes on each, the equivalent of more than 400 floppy disks. (Note that this CD-R disk is a “save once” disk. You can pull up the info on the disk forever but the disk can no longer be reused to save new info, even if you didn’t fill up the whole disk when you saved the first time.)

When you are ready to make your CD back up copy, do the following:

Press CD drawer button on the computer and when tray is extended place CD in the basin. Gently push the drawer shut.

The CD Drive Windows window will pop up as shown below:

Choose Create a CD Using Roxio Easy CD Creator

You are going to create a data disk not a music or DVD disk.

Choose “Make a data CD”

Click on the oblong blue button that says “Make a data CD project”

(You can navigate to the same place manually:

Open the D drive (press button on front of computer) and insert the disk in the CD ROM tray

Go to start to

Programs to

Roxio Easy CD Creator to

Applications to

Easy CD Creator as shown below.)

When the Roxio window opens, browse to the H drive as shown below:

Where the Window says “Select Resource files” use the pull down menu to browse to your folder on the H drive and drag the icon of your folder from the H drive folder diagonally down to the lower right pane (note the cursor arrow) of the Roxio window as shown below:

Then Click on the red record button above right side of the right pane of the Roxio window

Click start recording on the pop up window

When the copying is complete both blue progress bars will be full and will both read 100%:

Click OK and choose “No” which is “Don’t save” when it asks if you want to save the project, since you really don’t need to make another CD copy. The CD disk has everything on it already. The one CD copy is all you’ll need.

Just to be sure your disk has your directory folder burned onto it, go my computer and click on the D drive and your folder icon should appear in the window.

Eject the CD and use a Permanent Sharpie to write your name and the contents on the TOP side of the CD. The data is stored on the bottom side. Keep your data CD in a case or envelope safely tucked away in case we lose your directory in the server reconstruction this summer. Pat yourself on the back for having practiced safe computing!
