Health Article Summary and Oral Report

Specifics on Oral Report on Health Topic Not Covered from Mrs. Hartzfeld

1. CHOOSE A TOPIC

Choose a health-related topic that we haven’t studied. You can use the online databases to browse. Good choices for topics can be found in SIRS DISCOVERER or the Topic Search in EBSCO.

2. SEARCH ONLINE FOR A SCHOLARLY, SUBSTANTIAL ARTICLE

Using one of the health-related databases in EBSCO, locate a recent article (no more than three years old) in a periodical (pamphlet, newspaper or magazine) that discusses some aspect of the health topic you are investigating.  The article must be substantial, two or more pages in length. Email the article to your home email address as well as print out one hard copy of the article.

3. REQUEST & OBTAIN TOPIC APPROVAL AND ARTICLE GO-AHEAD

Notify Mrs. Hartzfeld as soon as you have chosen an article.  Mrs. Hartzfeld must okay your choice of  topic and article.  Also, only one person per article will be allowed.  The first person to sign up for any article will be the only person who can report on it.

4. WRITE AN ARTICLE SUMMARY AND MAKE PERSONAL CONCLUSION

Write a summary of the information in the article.  The summary should be in your own words and not merely a copy of the words of the article. Be sure to include all of the important information from the article.   When you have thoroughly digested the information in the article, include a substantial conclusion that you have made as a result of studying this article.  (Label it “Conclusion.”)  Be careful about spelling and sentence structure.  Also, neatness is important.

5. ORALLY REPORT WHAT YOU LEARNED

Be prepared to give your report orally in class beginning on Monday, Nov. 19.  The report should last 4-5 minutes.  Don’t just read the report; know it well enough to explain it.  You may read direct quotes.  Don’t talk too fast and try to make occasional eye contact with the class.  After giving the oral report, you will turn in your print-out of the article and your written summary of it.

 6. GRADING FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT

This assignment is worth 25 points.  You will be graded on the summary of the information and the presentation as follows.

Written Report_ 18 points

·        written report turned in with a copy of the article the day report is given

·        important information in the article summarized in your Health Assignment in own words

·        summary was complete

·        included a valid, sunstantial conclusion

·        correct spelling and sentence structure, neat

Oral Report:  7 points

·        report lasted at least 4 but no more than 5 minutes

·        explained report in own words rather than read it

·        talked slowly enough to be understood

·        made occasional eye contact with the class
