 Grade 8 Health Research Presentation

In pairs choose one of the following topics to research and then give a presentation to the rest of the class.

The topics are:

  • Eating disorders
  • Malnutrition of the poor and elderly
  • Communicable diseases – compare and contrast with non-communicable diseases, explain 2 or 3 of the major communicable diseases
  • Drug use and violence, drug use and decision making skills
  • Media portrayal of body shape/type
  • Mental health – what it is, causes, characteristics of mentally healthy and unhealthy people, difference between mature and immature behavior
  • Building an individual’s self-esteem including your own and others.
  • How specific nutrients affect health and performance
  • Describe changes in the body during adolescence.  How do these changes affect health and hygiene?
  • Alcoholics Anonymous is a world wide organization which helps alcoholics and their families.  How does their program for alcoholics work?  Is it effective?  What do they do to help families of alcoholics?

We will spend two days in the library to research the topic and one day in class to work on your presentation. You need to find 4-5 sources of information.  At least three of these sources must be ones that Mr. DeFrange tells you about.  Print out information from any internet sites that you plan to use.  The presentation should last between 7 and 10 minutes.  After the presentation, we will have a short discussion of the topic.

The presentation will be worth 20 points and the research will be worth an additional 10 points. (One source=2 points, two sources=4 points, three sources = 6 points,  4 sources = 8 points, 5 sources = 10 points as long as the sources give accurate, related information.)  Qualities that will be considered in the presentation grade are:  treating the subject in a serious manner, enthusiasm, creativity, easy to hear and understand, did not read the report and staying within the time frame.  Also, please write 5 questions covering material in your report.  The format may be fill-in, true-false, or multiple choice.  Turn in with the answers.  This is worth 5 points.

All students should take notes during each presentation.  There will be a test covering this material.
