LEADERSHIP PROGRAM - Middle School
Leadership is taught, modeled, and expected at every level at Our Lady of the Elms School.
• Middle School students learn “personal leadership” through their study of The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens.
• Middle School Student Council members
plan activities such as pep assemblies and service activities for the
middle school students.
• A student from the 7th grade and the 8th grade serves as a
Coalition Representative on Coalition (the Elms High
School equivalent to Student Government).
• Eighth graders serve as buddies for
seventh graders, helping the girls adjust to life in Middle School.
• Small class size ensures that students
develop their “voice” in class.
• The annual Middle School Convocation
provides girls with the opportunity to work solo or in teams to develop
and demonstrate a learning activity that integrates two or more
disciplines. Examples from past years include: “Which bridge supports
more weight?” “Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow” (an original monologue weaving
the story of African American women), “Musical Recipe: The Basics of
Music Theory” (with viola demonstrations) and “Casey at Bat”
(integrating poetry with the physics of baseball vs. softball).
• Teamwork provides experience in
leadership throughout the curriculum.
